MediaCorp Raintree Pictures Explores Embalming Trade In New Film

3 Dec

SINGAPORE: A new movie by MediaCorp Raintree Pictures, titled “Untold Beauty”, explores the trade of embalming for the first time on the big screen.

As part of the set for the movie, the canteen at the old Criminal Investigation Department headquarters has been turned into a morgue.

Working with a S$1 million budget, Director Roy Lim said: “The biggest challenge in ‘Untold Beauty’ is the fact that I want to make a Chinese film – a Chinese story that happens in a Chinese community. Nothing that is too distinctively Singaporean. Not that I’m not proud of Singapore, but I just want to tell a simple Chinese community movie.”

“Untold Beauty” is Lim’s directorial debut. The former film buyer has previously acquired box office successes like “Dark Water” and “Ju-On”.

This film about the embalming trade and the professionals who conduct post-mortems has already been sold to be screened in France, based on the script alone.

MediaCorp Raintree Pictures hopes the movie will have a worldwide appeal, even without much of Singapore’s unique characteristics that were featured in its previous blockbuster “881”.

Managing Director of MediaCorp Raintree Pictures, Daniel Yun, said: “It’s ideal if we can really show the unique colour, taste and smell of Singapore. But we are now building a track record from around the world with the kind of movies that we are having.

“So our slate will be more international. With the inspired cast, we hope that something new will come out from this part of the world for the rest of the world to see.”

Filming for “Untold Beauty” will begin on 5 December. It stars Taiwanese actor Wing Fan and MediaCorp’s Jesseca Liu.

Filming will be completed in January next year and will be released in the third quarter of 2008.
