Singer Chris Brown Denies Rihanna Assault

LOS ANGELES : R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty here Monday to felony charges of allegedly attacking his pop-star girlfriend Rihanna earlier this year.

Brown, 19, spoke in a barely audible whisper to formally deny charges stemming from his alleged assault of Barbados-born “Umbrella” singer Rihanna following a pre-Grammy Award party on February 8.

The incident shocked the music world and left Rihanna nursing cuts and bruises to her face, forcing her to cancel a scheduled performance at the Grammys in Los Angeles later that day.

Brown is charged with felony counts of assault and making criminal threats. If convicted on all counts, Brown could face a sentence ranging from probation to four years and eight months in state prison, officials have said.

The case was adjourned until a hearing on April 29.

Rihanna’s lawyer Donald Etra said after the hearing the singer wanted the case to be concluded swiftly.

“My client would prefer this case be resolved quickly, and when this case is over going back to her life and career,” Etra said.

Asked if Rihanna wanted a plea deal, he added: “It’s not up to her to decide what kind of deal she wants. It’s up to the DA (district attorney).

Brown issued an apology following the alleged attack, saying he was “sorry and saddened” by the events and that he was seeking the counselling of his pastor, family and friends.

Affidavits filed in the case have said Brown allegedly slammed Rihanna’s head against the window of a car the couple were travelling in before repeatedly punching and biting her.
