Wings, Katy Perry & other theatrics add excitement to Victoria’s Secret show

HEAVENLY: Model Anya as an angel.

NEVER mind that Heidi Klum has quit.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show hardly missed a beat without the German supermodel, one of the most popular and well-known Victoria’s Secret Angel who clipped her wings in September after 13 years.

The annual lingerie fashion show was held at New York’s Gramercy Park on Wednesday night.

Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio, who walked with Klum in nine shows, told USA Today: ‘Obviously, it’s different.’

Her fellow countryman Adriana Lima added: ‘I miss the way she walks, and her laugh and her personality.’

US pop star Katy Perry – a natural fit with her va-va-voom curves that were as enviable as the pros and penchant for sexy, tight-fitting extravagant costumes – was also there to perform.

WINGED BEAUTIES: Model Karolina wearing devil’s wings and (inset) the back of model Lais Ribero’s peacock-
inspired costume.

Lima opened the show wearing a giant set of wings.

It marked her return to the catwalk since giving birth to daughter Valentina a year ago.

Lima told USA Today: ‘To be back in shape for the fashion show, it wasn’t easy for me. I worked very hard, hitting the gym seven days a week.’

She had company in Karolina Kurkova, who’s also a new mum.

The Czech told the Daily Mail: ‘I try to eat organic all the time. I don’t eat white sugar, white flour, processed food.’

Obviously, no one was thinking that these women were out of shape. Why would they, when there was Lima in the US$2 million (S$2.6 million) Bombshell Fantasy bra encrusted with diamonds and sapphires?

But here, the clothes – or lack thereof – are not important, unlike most fashion shows.

HELLO: Model Chanel Iman shooting bubbles.

It was the elaborate signature wings and props such as boxing gloves (like those on Angel Erin Heatherton) and peacock tails which added to the splendour and excitement on the runway.

Models first stormed the runway in leather mini jackets, blue feather wings emblazoned with ‘tough love’ and coated in silver metal and spikes, reported USA Today.

Then, under a sports theme, they showed off sexy boxing, baseball, racing and soccer outfits.

Model Izabel Goulart even ‘worked out’ – in lingerie, no less – heaving weights on stage.

In another set, gingham corsets and plaid wings made their way down the catwalk.

Model Lindsay Ellingson had a straw corset on while Ambrosio wore a high-neck chiffon baby-doll top with super-low panties, drawing a heart in the air as she walked.

The Wild Things segment had Kurkova appear in an animal print ensemble with peacock wings, and other models in animal prints and body paint that matched accompanying tribal dancers.

Other than Klum, two other important figures were also sorely missed because of their pregnancies.

They are Aussie babe Miranda Kerr (who is married to British actor Orlando Bloom) and Dutch stunner Doutzen Kroes, who wed deejay-producer Sunnery James on Sunday in her hometown of Eastermar in the Netherlands.
