Thousands thronged Orchard Road yesterday for last-minute Christmas buys, causing massive human and traffic jams.
Many shopping malls said their Christmas sales rose 20 per cent year-on-year in the first half of this month. The Singapore Retailers Association said consumer confidence had gone up.
To facilitate traffic, some roads in Orchard will be closed on Christmas and Boxing Day. The following roads will be closed from 1pm on Saturday to 1am on Sunday:
– Orchard Road (between Scotts Road and Bideford Road)
– The carriageway of Mount Elizabeth in the direction of Orchard Road (between Nutmeg Road and Orchard Road)
SBS Transit will also be adding more trips and extending its operating hours for buses and trains. In addition to the 220 train trips added weekly for this month, 96 train trips will be added on Christmas Eve on the North South and East West Lines. A total of 41 trips will be added after the evening peak hours on the North East Line.
