Dengarnya…: Khabar Dari Pangkor

20 Feb

Murphy Setuju Tanggung Anak

9 Feb

EDDIE MURPHY

MELANIE BROWN

LOS ANGELES – Pelakon komedi, Eddie Murphy mengakhiri pertikaian mahkamah dengan bekas anggota Spice Girls, Mel B dengan bersetuju membayar kos saraan anak mereka berjumlah berjuta-juta dolar, lapor sebuah akhbar semalam.

Penyelesaian mahkamah itu menetapkan Murphy menanggung kos sara hidup bulanan anak perempuannya, Iris Angel sebanyak AS$51,700 (RM185,370) sehingga berumur 18 tahun dengan bayaran keseluruhan mencecah AS$10.3 juta (RM37 juta).

– Agensi

Aktres Terkenal Dicalon Pelakon Paling Teruk

24 Jan

Jessica Alba

Menyertai senarai bekas lakonan lawak Myers dalam kategori filem paling teruk ialah Disaster Movie dan Meet the Spartans, filem yang disifatkan umpama ‘seekor kuda dibelasah dengan teruk’, aksi seram yang tidak menepati konsep iaitu The Happening, drama fantasi In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale serta The Hottie & the Nottie.

The Hottie and the Nottie.

Pelakon The Women, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith dan Meg Ryan, semuanya berkongsi pencalonan aktres paling teruk.

– Agensi

Murphy Pegang Watak Jahat Batman

19 Dec

– Agensi

Cameron Takut Teater

16 Dec

Rap
MENJADI trend teater muzikal diadaptasi daripada filem. Sebelum ini banyak filem Hollywood berjaya di pentas Broadway antaranya Aladdin, Cinderella, Beauty And The Beast dan High School Musical. Manakala kita juga berbangga dengan kemunculan teater seperti Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical, P Ramlee The Musical dan Impak Maksima The Musical.

Lakonannya makin mendapat perhatian selepas itu menerusi The Last Supper, Feeling Minnesota, Head Above Water, My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), Charlie’s Angels (2000) dan The Sweetest Thing (2002).

No Singing Princess Fiona For Diaz

15 Dec

NEW YORK : Providing the voice for the animated Princess Fiona in the “Shrek” film franchise is the limit actress Cameron Diaz is willing to do.

When asked if she would consider portraying Fiona on stage, she rejected the suggestion although she raved that she is a big fan of “Shrek the Musical” during its Broadway opening on Sunday night.

“No. Absolutely not. What they do up there… is, to me, impossible. It’s wonderful, though. They’ve done such a great job. They worked really hard, and it really pays off.”

Playing Fiona in “Shrek the Musical” is Tony-winning actress Sutton Foster while actor Brian d’Arcy James portrays the titular smelly green ogre who lives in a swamp and falls in love with Fiona.

“It’s hilarious,” said Diaz, looking classic in a Bill Blass dress, black Dior coat and bright red lips. “There’s so many laughs… It’s great to see all the actors playing it together, because when we do it for the animated (films), we never see each other. We don’t work together.”

Diaz will be back for her voice role in the fourth instalment of the “Shrek” film, slated for release in 2010. Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy will return as Shrek and Donkey, respectively.

Other stars seen at Sunday’s performance included America Ferrera, Joan Rivers, Rosie Perez, Kathie Lee Gifford, Honda Kotb, Phylicia Rashad, Ben Stiller and his wife, actress Christine Taylor.

Cinema: Only If You Dig Myers

Hurrah! This bad comedy is over!
Hurrah! This bad comedy is over!

NOW SHOWING

THE LOVE GURU
Directed by Marco Schnabel
Starring Mike Myers, Ben Kingsley, Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Romany Malco, Meagan Good, Omid Djalili

Kingsley as Guru Tugginmypuddha in The Love Guru.
Kingsley as Guru Tugginmypuddha in The Love Guru.

THE biggest joke in this movie is not that Mike Myers makes fun of the New Age self-help field but that Ben Kingsley stars as his crossed-eye Guru Tugginmypuddha who encourages his ashram students in India to fight using urine-soaked mops!

Kingsley, of course, is well-known for his Academy Award-winning performance as India’s greatest spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi in Richard Attenborough’s 1982 movie.

I thought playing Gandhi and spoofing a spiritual teacher borders on being insulting. Maybe that’s because I have always revered Kingsley in Gandhi. But elsewhere, people seem to accept Myers’s brand of crude comedy.

The movie has Val Kilmer and Jessica Simpson attending one of the Guru’s talks. Even Deepak Chopra makes an appearance as himself.
Morgan Freeman lends his voice on the voice-over machine and Canadian ice hockey player Rob Blake appears as himself.

Mariska Hargitay (who plays Olivia Benson in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit) has her name turned into a greeting.

In less than two hours, the movie packs jokes that are mostly crass, vulgar and are, in most parts, about private parts.

The humour doesn’t deviate from that of Austin Powers, in which Myers also starred in, making his latest outing just like watching the groovy secret agent in a different uniform and location. The jokes are the same.

Vulgar jokes aside, Myers antics are at times rib-tickling. I love the mobile cushion that Pitka (Myers) moves on, with a control on its side and a reverse parking alarm. It’s absolutely silly and it’s hilarious.

In The Love Guru, Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba), who owns the Toronto Maple Leafs ice hockey team, hires Pitka to help her star player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) get back his wife Prudence (Megan Good) and his concentration in the game.

Prudence is now dating L.A King’s legendary goalie, Jacques “Le Coq” Grande (Justin Timberlake).

There is even a Bollywood dance routine between Myers and Alba and while we may not find it very funny, having been exposed to Bollywood films that seem to have endless dancing, the Western market might just find the dancing routine new.

The two even sing in Hindi with English subtitles crawling on the screen.

Myers, like Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy, may have fallen into that deep comedy trap of creating and re-creating films of the same flavour, hoping for an audience who would watch them once.

I guess one watch is fine, if you have time to burn and if you have had a very bad day and desperately need a laugh. The jokes won’t be so funny the second time around.

See: Charming Mr Napkin Head

THE HOLIDAY directed by Nancy Meyers
Starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, Eli Wallach,
Edward Burns and Rufus Sewell
Distributed by Berjaya HVN Sdn Bhd

AT the risk of sounding like a complete airhead, I think Jude Law steals the show with his character Graham, the charming widowed father of two who tries to juggle looking after his two daughters with falling in love.
I thought the Mr Napkin Head trick is cute and the way he cries at the end of this movie is simply heart-melting.
Kate Winslet carries her role as Iris very well too. Iris tries hard to get away from Jasper (Sewell), the love of her life who doesn’t return her love. One could feel her tension trying to break off from him and the
strong attraction she still feels.
Cameron Diaz is adorable as the workaholic Amanda but her character is
two-dimensional. Jack Black plays a lovable film music composer but somehow, Law’s and Winslet’s characters have more impact than Diaz’s and Black’s.
The DVD doesn’t come with bonus features (except for two movie trailers).
It’s a predictable love story. Two women who were unlucky in love suddenly have their fortunes changed when they swap homes.

But the movie is well crafted, so you will be able to enjoy it on days you need an easy watch and have that fuzzy feeling inside. – SL

DEFINITELY, MAYBE directed by Adam Brooks
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Derek Luke, Abigail Breslin, Elizabeth Banks and Rachel Weisz
Distributed by Berjaya HVN Sdn Bhd

What happens when you don’t really know what you want?
In the case of Will Hayes (Reynolds), he stumbles back and forth between girlfriends Emily (Banks), Summer (Weisz) and April (Fisher), always failing to seize the moment when love is in front of his eyes.
It’s an endearing love story because many of us are like Hayes, in a way; hesitant and not brave enough to speak in case we get rejected. So we miss the moments and if, like Hayes, we are lucky enough, they will come
back to our lives.
This movie takes place in a span of 16 years and that gives room for the characters to develop their feelings and characters. The backdrop of American politics (especially during the time of President Bill Clinton) gives a concrete timeline to the story.
I thought what’s different in this romantic comedy is the ability of Reynolds to have a level of chemistry, in different ways, with three
women in the same movie. He’s the ideal boyfriend to Emily, the best friend to April and the smitten little boy to Weisz.
The DVD comes with some bonus goodies including deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the cast who talks about their characters. One section is dedicated to how the characters’ appearances change in the span of the movie.
In the end, what this movie says is even if some things in your life don’t turn out as planned, it is never too late to love. – SL

Norbit directed by Brian Robbins
Starring Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy, Thandie Newton, Eddie
Griffin, Terry Crews and Cuba Golding
Distributed by Berjaya HVN Sdn Bhd

Eddie Murphy is once again doing his split personality thing. We saw it in Coming To America and now, in the comedy Norbit, he again takes on the two main roles plus one more.
In three amazing performances, he plays a dorky, weedy young African American male, a gargantuan, strident, bullying woman and an elderly China man.
With the help of some quite incredible make-up and prosthetics, Murphy is the master at this.
In his Chinaman persona, he apparently chatted away with other members of the cast at the beginning of the movie, with them being completely unaware that they were talking with Eddie himself.
Within the special features section of the DVD, we see the fascinating secrets of how Murphy is so convincingly transformed into three different characters.
Make-up and prosthetic artists are interviewed, and the different special effects employed to enable two of his characters to interact together on screen are also demonstrated.
However, what comes across in interviews with the director and other cast
members is their admiration for Eddie as an actor, and his uncanny skill for giving his on screen personas such individually and depth.
He has an ability to alter his stance, mannerisms, gait, as well as accent
and tone of voice, and to do this instantaneously.
The film is a showcase of Eddie’s talents as an actor, and writer, since he and his brother Charles wrote the script.
The film is surely funny in places, but be warned much of the humour is sexist and vulgar – so it is for adults only, and not easily offended adults at that. – JH

SNOW BUDDIES directed by Robert Vince
Starring Dominic Scott Kay, and an amazing cast of puppies
Voices (canine) by Jim Belushi, Whoopi Goldberg, Kris Kristofferson and others.
Distributed by Berjaya HVN Sdn Bhd

A film for dog lovers filled with plenty of “ooooh” and “aaaah” moments, as the little fur ball puppy stars do their sentimental thing.
The plot follows a simple course, with a lovable family of urban puppies. The Buddies find themselves transported to the icy wastes of Alaska, and running in a dog sled race.
This is very much a pre-teen children’s film, without the witty story line and dialogue of, say, Cats and Dogs, which adults as well as a
child audience could find humour in. It is very Disney, and culturally American in its language and the way it almost overwhelms with sentimentality.
Strangely there was more for adults in the extras section of the DVD where some of the special effects are explained. During shooting in Canada, the four-legged cast was considerably more pampered off-screen than human actors!
There is also a quite humorous script in the second version of the movie, with the commentary voice-overs replacing the original soundtrack, and the canines “discussing” their performances, and their off-camera intrigues too.
Taking things further still, there is even a bloopers chapter, with again a canine commentary to it. Some clips of the puppies reverting back to real puppy behaviour are perhaps the funniest moments.
A great movie for the younger audience, great children’s voice-overs for the puppies, but too simplistic and infantile in its dialogue for anyone beyond the age of 13. – JH
Rating: **** (for children).

He's The Dominator

9 Jun

SINGAPORE: Dominic Lau is smitten by a MediaCorp hottie. Only, it’s not Fann Wong, Fiona Xie or any other lithesome beauty.

In fact, his crush doesn’t even own a set of ovaries.

“I actually got to meet Gurmit Singh and I was so blown away!” said the Eurasian good-looker (his mum’s English). “He’s a big star in the region you know!”

While Gurmit is indeed a bright, shining star on our sunny isle, it was surprising to hear the Hong Kong-based Dominic go on and on about him (“He’s such a funny, warm, great person!”) – especially when the highlight of his career was hosting a programme on the red carpet at last year’s Academy Awards.

“It must have been the biggest thing I’ve done,” said MediaCorp TV Channel 5’s latest hunk and Channel V VJ. “It was my first live telecast ever and I was so nervous. But it was amazing to get to interview big Hollywood A-listers, like Helen Mirren, Eddie Murphy, Greg Kinnear, Clint Eastwood, Steve Carell and Al Gore.”

As he went on about his Oscar adventure, thanks to his additional role as the host of Star Movies’ VIP Access – he has a manner of prattling on as if you were his newfound best friend – one couldn’t help but wonder: Isn’t going from Tinseltown to Caldecott Hill a bit of an anti-climax?

“Of course not. I got to interview some big stars of America. Now, I get to mingle with the big names of this region,” the 26-year-old former model said.

Dominic was in town to promote his newly-minted job as host of The Showdown, the Channel 5 game show that pits local celebrities against each other. The commercial music graduate told TODAY that all it took was one phone call from MediaCorp to get him on a plane to Singapore.

That and our pretty women.

“The girls here … Woah! So pretty and always in shorts and flip-flops!” he said, grinning mischievously.

But isn’t there a special someone in his life to keep him in Hong Kong? For the first time during the interview, Dominic’s cocksure but likable demeanour turned almost wistful.

“When I first started out with Channel V back in 2005, I met a very beautiful girl called Sarah (Tan),” he said. “I was very smitten and I am not usually like that with girls or people.”

Former Channel V VJ Sarah Tan and ESPN Star Sports presenter Soo Kui Jien got married in Bali on Dec 21 last year and are expecting a baby due anytime soon.

“I sincerely hope from the bottom of my heart that she’s doing well. Kui Jien is a really lucky man,” he said.

And that was when the articulate host blessed with pretty-boy looks and who’s on the way to becoming a household name in Singapore fell uncharacteristically quiet.

“Sarah Tan is the one that got away.”

The happily-married couple politely declined to comment.

The Showdown airs every Thursday at 8pm on MediaCorp TV Channel 5. –
