Consumer Electronics Show Kicks Off In Las Vegas

9 Jan

LAS VEGAS : The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) opened here on Thursday with exhibitors displaying gadgetry ranging from snazzy new smartphones to envelope-sized computers to 3D high-definition television sets.

Despite the recession, some 2,700 manufacturers of high-tech products from around the globe have turned up for this year’s edition of the world’s largest consumer technology trade show.

The show floor of the Sands Expo and Convention Center morphed into a giant electronic amusement park as visitors, buyers, vendors and journalists shuffled from booth to booth checking out the latest in hardware and software.

Lending glamour to the affair was Hollywood movie star Tom Hanks, who turned up to help pitch Sony’s new products, which include a P Series Vaio notebook computer small enough to fit in a suit jacket and glasses with a video screen.

Singer Stevie Wonder was also on hand to lend support to a line of “vision-free” products for the blind.

With laptop sales now surpassing desktop sales, providing one of the rare bright spots for the industry, Sony wasn’t the only computer maker showing off lightweight pocket-sized “netbook” computers.

Taiwan-based MSI unveiled a unique “hybrid” netbook that combines solid state and conventional disk drives in a tough, mini-laptop designed for simple computer tasks and getting on the Internet.

“It’s unbelievably light,” spokesman Mark Olson said as he balanced one of the MSI U115 netbooks on his palm.

Palm, the company struggling to regain market share from rivals such as Apple, Nokia and Research in Motion, made a comeback of sorts with a new operating system and well-received new smartphone, the Pre.

Television manufacturers, as usual, accounted for much of the buzz with much of the focus on the move towards developing Internet-enabled TV.

Sony, LG Electronics, Toshiba, Samsung and Vizio are all showing off new flat-screen television models in Las Vegas embedded with Yahoo! “TV widget” software offering links to popular websites.

A YouTube widget allows videos from the website to be streamed to television sets. A MySpace widget allows members to watch TV while connecting with online profiles and friends.

Thin is still in when it comes to TV, with LG Electronics saying it was making a 55-inch high-definition LHX flat-screen television that may be less than an inch thick in its final design.

“This may be the thinnest LCD television on the market when it comes out,” said LG’s US marketing head Marc Sorkin. “We are trying to achieve this piece of art that really blends on a wall.”

Panasonic Corp. for its part is bringing 3D high-definition television into homes and enlisted “Titanic” director James Cameron to make the case for its 3D home theater system.

The 3D Full HD Plasma (3D FHD) system made its debut at October’s CEATEC exhibition in Japan but was displayed in the United States for the first time at CES.

Panasonic also unveiled the first portable Blu-ray disc player.

On the software front, Microsoft chose CES as the venue to announce that a test version of its Windows 7 operating system will be available worldwide on Friday.

“We are on track to deliver the best version of Windows ever,” Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said in the opening CES keynote speech.

“We are putting in all the right ingredients: simplicity, reliability and speed.”

Besides the major consumer items, hundreds of other products are on display here tailored to people such as seniors or those with disabilities.

Others are simply fun, such as a Minoru 3D webcam or sunglasses from TriSpecs with ear buds and Bluetooth circuitry that can relay music or conversations wirelessly from MP3 players.

Environmentally friendly products are also a major theme and consumer electronics titans Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba announced an initiative to recycle the TVs and other gadgets they sell in the United States.

Motorola, also seeking to capitalize on the green trend, unveiled the first mobile phone made from recycled water bottles, the MOTO W233 Renew.

Hollywood Actors' Union Postpones Strike Vote

24 Dec

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood’s major actors union has decided to postpone a controversial vote among its members over whether to allow its leaders to call a strike after its failure to reach a new contract with major studios, a union leader said on Monday.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) said it had temporarily shelved a strike authorisation vote that had been scheduled to run for three weeks from January 2 in order to “address the unfortunate division and restore consensus”.

Voting will now be delayed until after a January 12-13 emergency meeting of SAG’s board.

Balloting will take place after the meeting, providing guild leaders more time to garner support after opposition to the vote increased following a rebellion of New York board members this month.

“While almost 100 high profile members and 2,524 total members have endorsed the strike authorisation vote mandated by the national board, more than 100 high profile actors and 1,373 actors have lent their names to the opposition campaign,” said SAG’s national executive director Doug Allen in a statement cited by Daily Variety.

Tom Hanks and George Clooney joined more than 130 stars in a letter asking for the vote to be called off, arguing that a strike threat is not viable in the worsening economy.

Should 75 per cent of members approve industrial action, the SAG could authorise a strike, which could disrupt the Oscars on February 22.

SAG’s leaders have been holding out for a greater share of royalties from sales and showings of work screened on the Internet.

The guild is seeking union coverage for all Internet-only productions regardless of budget, residual payments for Internet productions replayed in ad-supported platforms online, and continued actor benefits during work stoppages, including those caused by strikes by other unions.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents the major studios, have been negotiating a deal with SAG since before the previous contract expired June 30.

The studios have said a formula for payment in new media formats has already been agreed upon by another actors union, directors, and writers, whose 100-day strike derailed the Golden Globe Awards in January.

The studios have said it was unreasonable for SAG to demand a better deal, especially now that the economy has worsened.

Fresh attempts to broker a deal foundered in November.

Redford, Crowe Join Stars Against Actors' Strike

19 Dec

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood icon Robert Redford and Oscar-winner Russell Crowe have joined the growing ranks of stars opposed to a possible strike by the top actors union, it was reported on Thursday.

Redford and Crowe and other stars including Julianne Moore and Hilary Duff have added their names to a petition urging the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) board not to hold a strike ballot, Daily Variety reported.

The petition calls for SAG leaders to quickly accept a deal tabled by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), suggesting the union regroup and hammer out a stronger contract in three years’ time.

“As hard as it may be to wait those three years under an imperfect agreement, we believe this is what we must do,” the letter from petition organisers to SAG chiefs said.

“We think that a public statement should be made by SAG recognising that although this is not a deal we want, it is simply not a time when our union wants to have any part in creating more economic hardship while so many people are already suffering.”

On Monday, more than 130 stars including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman and Tom Hanks called on SAG union not to authorise a walkout.

SAG leaders announced last week they would hold a ballot of the union’s 120,000 members on January 2 to obtain authorisation required to call a strike following failed negotiations with Hollywood studios.

Although union leaders have said they want to avoid a stoppage, they said a vote giving them authorisation to call a strike will give them greater leverage at the bargaining table.

The actors union has been in a stand-off with AMPTP since a previous contract expired in June. Fresh attempts to broker a deal foundered in November.

The actors’ union is holding out for a greater share of royalties from sales and showings of work screened on the Internet.

The AMPTP said the actors’ demands are unreasonable and have refused to improve a final offer made in June, similar to other agreements reached with writers, directors and a smaller actors union.

More Than 130 A-List Actors Oppose Strike Vote

17 Dec

LOS ANGELES: Dozens of film industry’s biggest stars including Oscar winners George Clooney, Charlize Theron, Morgan Freeman and Tom Hanks have joined a last-ditch attempt to prevent an actors’ strike from crippling the Hollywood awards season for the second consecutive year.

The A-list performers registered their opposition in a letter that circulated on the Internet as union leaders, including Screen Actors Guild (SAG) President Alan Rosenberg met in New York City to seek support for a strike authorization.

The letter, sent to guild board members and staff is the latest sign of unhappiness with the leadership of the 120,000-strong union.

“We support our union and we support the issues we’re fighting for, but we do not believe now is the time to be putting people out of work,” said the letter, adding that a strike would create “economic hardship” for workers at every level of the movie business.

“We don’t think that an authorization can be looked at as merely a bargaining tool,” said the letter, signed by “Desperate Housewives” actress Eva Longoria Parker, “Spider-Man” star Tobey Maguire, among others. “It must be looked at as what it is – an agreement to strike if negotiations fail.”

Negotiations between SAG and the studios stalled earlier this year, and the actors have been working without a contract since the previous one expired June 30.

A federal mediator intervened last month, but broke off talks after two days, triggering SAG’s recent move to call for a strike-authorization vote.

The guild wants terms that are better than the deals accepted by directors, writers, stagehands and another actors union earlier in the year.

It is seeking union coverage for all Internet-only productions regardless of budget, residual payments for Internet productions replayed in ad-supported platforms online, and continued actor benefits during work stoppages, including those caused by strikes by other unions.

Any strike would plunge the entertainment industry into chaos, and could threaten award shows such as the Oscars, which takes place on February 22.

Last year, a 100-day walkout by screenwriters created havoc and up to US$2 billion in losses, according to some estimates.

Spreading The Love

24 Oct

SINGAPORE: He’s one man, with three wives, seven children and a thousand and one problems. But Bill is taking it all in stride – Paxton that is. Not that Bill Henrickson isn’t trying hard to keep it all together in the second season of HBO black comedy “Big Love”, which debuts on Monday.

Indeed, Hollywood star Paxton shares more than a first name with the polygamist he’s played since 2006. He told TODAY over the phone from Los Angeles that he could “totally be that guy”.

Said Paxton: “Yes, it is politically incorrect for anyone to say that they would love to be married to three women but hey, who wouldn’t want to be him? He is a patriarchal figure. He’s the head of his business and his household. He’s a negotiator and a multi-tasker. He is able to make love to three women. He’s superman! He’s a complete fantasy!

“And his get-out-of-jail-free card is that he’s not sneaking around with these three women. He’s upfront and committed to each of them so, in a way, it’s okay to be in love with three women.”

Added the candid actor who has starred in major blockbusters including “Twister”, “Apollo 13” and “Aliens”: “Some journalist from South America came up to me and said, ‘You are a hero in my country!'”

The controversial Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated drama series, which just wrapped up filming its third season, centres around a true believer of the practice of polygamy, and his trials and tribulations balancing the financial, emotional and romantic needs of his three wives.

The real-life father of two kids and husband to just one wife also said that he was drawn to the show by the character-driven part, the quality of the cast (which includes Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin as his three wives) and the fact that Tom Hanks was one of the producers.

“To be honest, I never thought of doing a TV series. I really enjoyed having a career in movies, and I had even started directing films. But when I read the piece, I realised how original it was, how funny and how it had a lot of heart,” he said.

“I never got to do romantic parts in films throughout my career … so with three gorgeous leading ladies, this was like hitting the trifecta! Plus, the quality of the show is so amazing. We shoot the series like a big, long movie with no ending.”

So, what do we have to look forward to in Season 2? “There are a lot of plot developments but one of them has (my character Henrickson) meeting a pie waitress and thinking maybe it’s time to look for a fourth wife! The man is a serial polygamist – very dangerous!” he said, with a laugh.

“Maybe he’s taking too much Viagra. I don’t know. He’s like a vampire, but instead of blood, he needs to have sex everyday.”

Season 2 of “Big Love” premieres on Monday, October 27 at 11pm on HBO (StarHub Ch60). –
