Rapper 50 Cent Expands Empire To Filmmaking

PARK CITY, UTAH – He may be known as 50 Cent but rapper Curtis Jackson is among the world’s richest celebrities.

His estimated earnings of about US$150 million between June 2007 and June 2008 put him on the 26th spot on Forbes 2008 list of top 100 richest celebrities, and the multi-talented artiste who owns a record label and clothing line, acts and writes books, is looking to top that this year as he adds film production to his multimedia empire.

Promoting his new venture Cheetah Vision at the Sundance Film Festival this week, 50 Cent said the current global financial crisis did not deter him from starting a new business.

“I don’t think it will affect me as much as it will the other people that are out there because I’m not afraid to finance some of these things myself if I have to,” he said.

The rapper added that Cheetah Vision had already bought eight scripts and among the first to be produced would be “The Dance”, starring himself and Nicolas Cage.

“(The script) was previously passed around a little bit but both me and Nicolas Cage had an interest in the film so it will still happen. He plays the founder of a boxing program, and I play a fighter who goes to state prison,” 50 Cent said.

“They are all different types of movies that I bought the rights to, and we’re developing projects. You will see different things from me in the future,” he added.

50 Cent who has come a long way since his drug dealing days in his teens, also makes his directorial debut this year with his new feature film “Before I Self Destruct”. The movie will be given away free with his latest album of the same name, which is due to be released in late March.

The film, in which he also stars, tells the tale of an inner city youth whose mother is shot to death so he takes up a life of crime in order to support his younger brother.

High School Musical 3, Bolt temui penonton sebelum tahun 2008 berakhir

MENGAKHIRI jadual tayangan 2008 dengan dua filem menghiburkan, High School Musical 3: Senior Year (tayangan mulai 24 Oktober) dan animasi Bolt (27 November) yang meminjam suara pelakon John Travolta dan Susie Essman, Buena Vista nampaknya menyambung tayangan filem edaran mereka pada 2009 dengan beberapa lagi judul terbitan Walt Disney.

Membuka tirai pada 1 Januari ialah filem lakonan bintang komedi terkemuka dunia, Adam Sandler bersama Keri Russell, Guy Pearce, Courteney Cox dan Russell Brand, berjudul Bedtime Stories. Filem itu menyaksikan Sandler memegang watak pekerja hotel, Skeeter Bronson, yang menyimpan impian menjadi pengurus.

Skeeter bersetuju untuk menjaga dua anak saudaranya dengan tujuan membantu kakaknya. Bagi membuatkan mereka duduk diam, dia bercerita pada dua kanak-kanak itu. Tanpa diketahui, dengan berbuat demikian dia sebenarnya membuka pintu kepada sebuah dunia fantasi yang seakan sama dengan kehidupannya. Kanak-kanak itu pula cukup teruja dengan kisah fantasi itu yang kini menjadi nyata.

Kemudian, sebuah kisah komedi pengembaraan akan menemui penonton pada 19 Februari, berjudul Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Ia membariskan pelakon Jamie Lee Curtis dan Piper Perabo, berserta suara Salma Hayek, Andy Garcia, Drew Barrymore, Cheech Marin dan Paul Rodriguez.

Dalam filem ini, penonton dapat mengikuti kisah seekor anjing chihuahua bernama Chloe (suara Barrymore) yang mendapati dirinya tiba-tiba tersesat di sebuah kawasan sibuk di Mexico. Bersendirian buat julung kali, dia kini mengharapkan bantuan rakan baru seperti seekor anjing German Shepherd, Delgado (Garcia) dan anak anjing bernama Papi (George Lopez) untuk mendapatkan kekuatan pulang ke tempat asal.

Pada 12 Mac pula, Disney menghidangkan filem aksi lakonan Dwayne Johnson, AnaSophia Robb, Carla Cugino dan Ciaran Hinds, Race to the Witch Mountain. Sebuah lagi filem untuk tayangan Mac ialah Shopaholic, yang dibuat berdasarkan novel kelakar popular tulisan Sophie Kinsella. Filem yang ditayangkan pada 27 Mac itu dilakonkan Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, John Goodman, Joan Cusack, Kristin Scott Thomas, Kyrsten Ritter dan John Lithgow.

Bintang ternama, John Travolta, Robin Williams, Kelly Preston dan Seth Green pula bergabung tenaga menjayakan filem komedi Old Dogs yang akan ditayangkan mulai 16 April.

Antara lain, filem ini bercerita mengenai dua sahabat baik (Travolta, Williams) yang hidup tunggang langgang apabila mereka ditugaskan menjaga sepasang kembar berusia 6 tahun, pada ketika kedua-duanya berdepan urusan perniagaan terpenting dalam karier. Berlakon buat kali pertama dalam filem ini ialah Ella Bleu Travolta (anak John Travolta bersama Kelly Preston) dan Conner Rayburn yang menjadi pasangan kembar.

Bintang remaja kesayangan ramai, Miley Cyrus pula berganding dengan Emily Osment, Mitchel Musso dan Jason Earles dalam filem Hannah Montana: The Movie yang dijadual menemui peminat pada 1 Jun. Ia dibuat berdasarkan siri televisyen menggunakan judul serupa.

Sebuah lagi filem animasi komedi pengembaraan, G-Force yang menggunakan suara pelakon Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz dan Bill Nighy bakal menemui penonton pada 23 Julai tahun depan. Filem mengenai sekumpulan haiwan kecil yang cuba membongkar rancangan seorang hartawan untuk memusnahkan dunia itu diterbitkan oleh produser masyhur, Jerry Bruckheimer.

Pada 13 Ogos, sebuah lagi filem animasi, kali ini hasil kerjasama Disney dan Pixar berjudul Up akan ditayangkan. Ia mengisahkan seorang lelaki berusia 70 tahun yang berpadu tenaga bersama seorang kanak-kanak 10 tahun dalam usaha menyelamatkan dunia daripada kejahatan seorang saintis.

Aktor Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike dan James Francis pula disatukan dalam filem bercorak thriller, Surrogates, arahan Jonathan Mostow. Filem tayangan 20 November ini mengetengahkan kisah apa terjadi jika seorang manusia itu mampu mempunyai robot yang kelihatan sama dengan dirinya?

Disember pula menyaksikan dua lagi judul daripada Disney ditayangkan, iaitu bermula dengan A Christmas Carol (3-D) lakonan pelawak tersohor, Jim Carrey, pada 3 Disember. Kali ini Carrey memegang empat watak berbeza. Turut beraksi ialah Collin Firth, Gary Oldman dan Bob Hiskins.

Pada 24 Disember pula, filem kartun The Princess and the Frog bakal menghiburkan penonton dengan kisah cinta disampaikan dalam bentuk muzikal. Filem ini menggunakan suara Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, Jennifer Lewis dan John Goodman.

'Burn' Blazes To Top Of North American Box Office

LOS ANGELES: “Burn After Reading,” the newest dark comedy by sibling directors Ethan and Joel Coen, was the top weekend movie draw in the United States and Canada, preliminary industry figures showed Sunday.

The film, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, debuted with US$19.4 million in North American ticket sales, according to industry tracking company Exhibitor Relations.

In second place was the melodrama “The Family that Preys” by playwright-turned-filmmaker Tyler Perry with US$18 million, followed by police drama “Righteous Kill” starring Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino, with US$16.5 million.

The modern update of the classic film “The Women,” starring Hollywood sweetheart Meg Ryan, was in fourth place with US$10 million.

In fifth was “The House Bunny,” about an ousted Playboy bunny who becomes a college sorority house mother, with US$4.3 million.

The spoof “Tropic Thunder” – Ben Stiller’s movie-within-a-movie about filming a war flick in the middle of a real-life conflict zone – came in sixth place with US$4.1 million in receipts.

“Batman” sequel “The Dark Knight” was seventh with US$4 million. The blockbuster film also claimed the title of second all-time box office champion with US$512 million in ticket sales since its release.

Last week’s box office winner “Bangkok Dangerous,” starring Nicolas Cage as a ruthless hitman on assignment in Thailand, fell to eighth this week with just US$2.4 million in sales.

“Traitor,” a war-on-terror epic featuring Don Cheadle as a former US Special Ops officer and potential international conspirator, was ninth, pocketing US$2.4 million.

In 10th place was “Death Race,” an action-adventure flick about an ex-convict competing against prison inmates in a freedom-or-death car race, with US$2 million in ticket sales.

Elvis' Daughter Lisa Marie Presley Pregnant With Twins

LOS ANGELES: The daughter of the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” Elvis Presley is pregnant with twins, her spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Lisa Marie Presley, 40, angrily confirmed her pregnancy in March after the publication of paparazzi photos that showed her expanding waistline.

A spokeswoman for Presley confirmed in an email to AFP on Tuesday that the singer was expecting twins.

Presley married her fourth husband Michael Lockwood, a musician and her producer, in January 2006 in Japan. Her two children, age 19 and 15, are from her first marriage to Danny Keough.

Presley was also married to “King of Pop” Michael Jackson for a year and a half, and was then married briefly to actor Nicolas Cage in 2002.

A follower of Scientology like her mother Priscilla, Presley has released two albums since 2003, both of which reached the US top 10 and sold more than a million copies each.

Presley was nine years old when her father Elvis died in 1977 at the age of 42. Elvis was also a twin; his brother Jesse Garon died at birth in 1935. – AFP/de

Alleged Arms Dealer Bout In Thai Court For Extradition Case

BANGKOK – A Thai court will on Monday begin extradition hearings for alleged Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, which could see the man dubbed the “Merchant of Death” face terrorism charges in the United States.

Bout, who acquired his macabre nickname for his alleged role in supplying weapons to some of the world’s bloodiest conflicts, was arrested in Bangkok in March after a sting operation headed by US agents.

Thailand’s criminal court must decide whether there is enough evidence to send Bout to the US, where he faces four counts of terrorism for seeking to sell millions of dollars of weapons to Colombia’s Marxist FARC rebels.

During an elaborate undercover operation, Bout allegedly agreed to supply surface-to-air missiles to US anti-drug agents posing as rebels from FARC, which Washington considers to be a foreign terrorist organisation.

He has also been charged with conspiracy to kill US officers or employees and conspiracy to acquire and use an anti-aircraft missile.

US officials including Attorney General Michael Mukasey have said they are optimistic the Thai court will allow the extradition.

Bout faces life in prison if convicted by a US court, and has been held at a maximum-security prison outside Bangkok since his arrest on March 6. The former Soviet air force officer has denied the charges against him.

Bout’s Thai lawyer Lak Nitiwatvichan said the court was likely on Monday to hear testimonies from US embassy staff and Thai police involved in the case.

“I don’t know how long the hearings will take, but I am confident I can prove the charges are politically motivated,” Lak told AFP.

A US indictment accuses Bout of using a fleet of cargo planes to transport weapons and military equipment to Africa, South America and the Middle East.

Prosecutors said that as a result of alleged trafficking in Liberia, Bout was in 2004 placed on the US government’s Specially Designated Nationals list, prohibiting any transactions between US nationals and Bout.

Bout is accused of being a global gun-runner since the 1990s, and is believed to have supplied arms to the Taliban militia, Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda terror network and former Liberian leader Charles Taylor.

The mustachioed Russian’s dealings are said to have inspired the Hollywood movie “Lord of War,” starring Nicolas Cage as a ruthless arms trader.

His apparent downfall came after a 12-month undercover operation in which US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents infiltrated Bout’s inner circle posing as Colombian rebels seeking an arsenal of weapons.

Perkahwinan Hancur Secepat Kilat

SETIAP kali pasangan artis Hollywood melangsungkan perkahwinan, ramai yang sebenarnya akan meneka sejauh mana ikatan suci itu akan bertahan. Bukan bermaksud mahu mencurigai mahligai cinta mereka.

Namun, status perkahwinan kepada mereka bagaikan satu permainan. Bila suka bersama. Bila benci bercerai. Senario ini bukan sahaja popular di kalangan artis Hollywod tetapi juga semakin ‘hangat’ di kalangan masyarakat moden.

Seperti Julia Roberts dan Lyle Lovett, pasangan ini berkahwin pada 27 Jun 1993 walaupun hanya berkenalan selama tiga minggu. Notis perkahwinan diberikan 72 jam sebelumnya dan berlangsung di Marion, Indiana. Namun, tidak sampai dua tahun, pasangan ini bercerai.

Aktres Selma Blair dan pemuzik Ahmet Zappa pula melangsungkan perkahwinan pada 24 Januari 2004 di Los Angeles. Blair kemudian memfailkan penceraian atas alasan tidak serasi pada 21 Jun 2006.

Bagi Jennifer Lopez yang baru menimang anak kembar, dia sebenarnya sebelum ini pernah berkahwin dengan penari, Cris Judd. Bertemu Judd semasa merakamkan klip video, Love Don’t Cost A Thing, pasangan ini disatukan pada 29 September 2001.

Pada 26 Oktober 2002, Jessica Simpson, yang ketika itu berusia 22 tahun, berkahwin dengan Nick Lachey. Selepas sebulan berhadapan dengan spekulasi tabloid, Simpson dan Lachey mengumumkan perpisahan mereka pada November 2005.

Simpson memfailkan penceraian pada 16 Disember 2005 dengan alasan tidak bersefahaman. Penceraian secara rasmi disahkan pada 30 Jun.

“Oh, ia sangat menyakitkan hati,” ujar Simpson kepada majalah Elle pada 6 Februari 2007 mengenai pandangan bekas suaminya bercinta dengan Vanessa Minnillo.

SAMA cantik, sama padan, tetapi pernikahan Jessica dan Nick gagal bertahan.

Ramai yang menyatakan Simpson berasa cemburu tetapi dia menafikannya.

“Saya rasa saya terlalu sukar untuk dicintai. Mungkin saya selalu menakutkan mereka (lelaki) sehingga mereka larikan diri. Namun, saya tidak pernah kesal dengan perkahwinan bersama Lachey selama tiga tahun.

Britney Spears mungkin terkenal dengan pelbagai kontroversi. Sebelum berkahwin, dia pernah menjalin hubungan dengan penyanyi, Justin Timberlake selama empat tahun. Hubungan mereka tamat pada tahun 2002.

BRITNEY dan Jason Allen mencipta rekod perkahwinan terpantas di kalangan selebriti Hollywood.

Namun, pada 3 Januari 2004, Spears mengejutkan dunia apabila dilaporkan berkahwin dengan kawan baiknya semasa kecil, Jason Allen Alexander di The Little White Wedding Chapel, Las Vegas.

“Perkahwinan itu hanya bertahan selama 55 jam. Mereka berpisah kerana Britney sendiri merasakan dirinya tidak mengenali Jason dengan mendalam,” kata satu sumber.

Penyanyi bermasalah ini kemudian berkahwin dengan penari, Kevin Federline pada 18 September 2004 dan kemudian bercerai pada Julai 2007.

Pada usia awal 20-an, Nicolas Cage pernah bercinta dengan Elizabeth Daily dan Uma Thurman. Dia kemudian terlibat dengan Christina Fulton, ibu kepada anaknya, Weston Coppola Cage yang dilahirkan pada 26 Disember 1990.

IKATAN perkahwinan Nicolas dan Lisa Marie hanya bertahan selama empat bulan.

Aktor ini pernah berkahwin sebanyak tiga kali. Isteri pertamanya, aktres Patricia Arquette dikahwininya pada 8 April 1995 dan bercerai pada 18 Mei, 2001. Lisa Marie Presley pula merupakan isteri kedua Cage.

Mereka berkahwin pada 10 Ogos 2002 berpisah empat bulan kemudian pada bulan Disember. Penceraian mereka disahkan pada 16 Mei 2004.

It's Not All About Chiselled Good Looks Anymore In Hollywood

Let’s start with a question: If you could choose any of these men to go out with, whom would it be? Your choices are Jack Black, Paul Giamatti and Steve Carrell.

Based on looks alone, it’s not an easy choice, since none of them are close to movie-star handsome.

But if conventional wisdom states that movie audiences want to see fantasy people – you know, the type they would like to become, or at least take on a dream date – then these actors are turning convention on its head.

Meet the new breed of leading men: Plain looking, maybe a little on the short side and whose physiques cry out “I could use a couple of months in a gym”.

The chiselled good looks of the typical movie star aren’t likely to go out of fashion any time soon, but there has been a perceptible shift in attitudes as to what makes a leading man.

When it comes to unconventional male stars, comedy has long been at the cutting edge. Comedic actors thrive on their ability to generate laughs, not smoulder on screen.

The difference now is that comedy has become a big money-spinner at the box office, which means the actors who star in such films are quickly catapulted to leading-man status.

In the past, Woody Allen was his generation’s most unconventional leading man, although the reason he ended up onscreen is that he wrote, directed and cast himself in his own films.

These days, there is a host of unconventional leading men that the studios are keen to put in their comedy blockbusters.

That is why having funnyman Black stuff his flabby physique into a spandex wrestling suit is expected to attract draw huge crowds to Nacho Libre, which is now out in Singapore cinemas.

Black’s peers include Owen “crooked nose” Wilson, the ungainly Will Ferrell – whose streaking scene in Old School is the stuff of nightmares – and Vince Vaughn, who to be fair, was a handsome young stud in Swingers until middle age caught up with him.

who’s the superhero now?

It’s not only in comedies where the unconventional leading man comes out to play.

Paul Giamatti went from indie lead in Sideways to summer blockbuster lead in director M Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water, which will be released here next Thursday.

And then there is the biggest breakout role of them all for an unconventional-looking actor: Tobey McGuire as Peter Parker in the mega-grossing Spider-Man movies.

As an actor, McGuire isn’t tall, looks rather plain and has a tendency to mumble. Yet he’s a superhero.

What’s behind the newly-exalted status for the unorthodox-looking actor in Hollywood? One factor is the evolving opinion on what constitutes masculinity in popular culture.

Take, for example, the slow but steady rise of “geek culture”, which began with the dotcom boom in the 1990s.

Suddenly, geekdom equalled power owing to the sheer number of so-called geeks who were getting rich because they possessed the kind of knowledge that the average person couldn’t be bothered with. When the geek became mainstream, so did their interests.

J R R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which enthralled fantasy fans upon its publication in the 1950s, enthralled everyone else when it became a massive summer blockbuster in 2001.

Meanwhile, The Matrix trilogy drew its inspiration from sci-fi and Hollywood studio executives are still trying to find the next big comic book to adapt into a movie.

With the geek’s ascendance, ideas of masculinity have become much less rigid: To be tough, athletic and chiselled was no longer the be-all and end-all of manhood.

Becoming the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs wasn’t such a bad deal after all.

Or one could simply be a little bit of both, like British cult author Neil Gaiman, a self-confessed nerd who looks quite at home in a leather jacket.

In fact, to be a testosterone-charged Alpha Male may even seem rather outdated. This is, after all, the era of the metrosexual, retrosexual, pomosexual (as in postmodern-sexual) and everything else in between.

In other words, there is a place for everyone, from old-school handsome Brandon Routh in Superman Returns to hound dog-looking Nicolas Cage in the upcoming World Trade Center to Johnny Depp, who inhabits an under-populated grey area of stars who are good-looking in real life but questionable-looking in films.

The move towards less gritty male leads also has something to do with a parallel shift in celebrity culture, which has caused the stars to lose much of their glitter. Where once they were in a class by themselves, these days Hollywood actors tend to resemble ordinary people going about their mundane chores, as captured by the camera lenses of the paparazzi.
