KERANA GOSIP

30 Apr

Lalu, mengapa perlu bersara?

Kalau sedang laris seperti pisang goreng panas, mengapa perlu mengucapkan selamat tinggal?

‘Bosanlah.

MODEL BEHAVIOUR

30 Apr

FIRST ASIAN
MODEL BEHAVIOUR
By Kwok Kar Peng
April 30, 2010

She’s an aspiring actress and her rumoured boyfriend is a two-time Golden Horse Awards Best Actor winner.

She really can’t ask for a better teacher, but Chinese model Lynn Hung is not exploiting that advantage.

The 29-year-old actress in Ip Man 2 has been romantically linked to singer-actor Aaron Kwok, 44, for years, but both have remained coy about their relationship.

However, when FiRST spoke to Hung in an exclusive interview over the phone from Hong Kong, she didn’t shy away from the supposedly sensitive topic.

She said in a soft child-like voice: ‘I’ve never asked him for acting tips because it’s very embarrassing to.

‘I’m like a primary school student when it comes to acting, and he has reached a very high level. I don’t want to bring my elementary questions to ask him. Forget it, I’ll find out myself or ask the director.’

The doe-eyed 1.79m-tall beauty, who has been based in Hong Kong for more than four years, continued to answer our questions about Kwok.

No, they don’t try to avoid each other at public events on purpose, like the recent HongKong Film Awards.

They have bumped into each other backstage at other gigs and acknowledged each other too, she said.

So we went in for the kill: Are you and Kwok a couple then?

Hung went shy.

Just friends?

‘We’re just friends,’ she said with a giggle.

You mean very good friends?

She said yes, giggling even more sweetly.

Being Kwok’s rumoured squeeze has thrust Hung into the limelight – perhaps a tad too much.

She said photographers trail her when she’s out, but she doesn’t show them a disgruntled face ‘because they are only doing their job’.

She continued: ‘But if there are too many of them, I go straight home.

‘Or I wouldn’t even go out if I see them waiting for me at the foot of my apartment block. I’ll stay home and surf the Internet, watch TV, play with my dog or just sleep.’

Hung, who graduated with a degree in fashion design and performing arts, also didn’t get worked up when we suggested that she may be called a ‘vase’ – pretty but unimportant – for her small role in IpMan 2, which opens here today.

This is the sequel to the 2008 martial arts flick on the life of the legendary Wing Chun master, and Hung plays the gentle and virtuous wife of Ip (Donnie Yen) in both movies.

Her scenes are pitifully few and perhaps even inconsequential.

Hung said nonchalantly that it doesn’t bother her, and added: ‘It’s not something bad to be called a vase. It’s not as if they are saying I can’t act.

‘As long as there are people willing to look at me, I have a chance to act.’

As for those who criticise her weak acting skills, Hung said: ‘Maybe we’re not good enough in the eyes of the movie professionals, but I’ve no regrets and I did not let anybody down because I’ve done my best.’

Though she appears only sporadically in the testosterone-charged film, she admitted there are benefits being the rose among the thorns.

For example, her male co-stars let her eat first during meal times.

And when the cast is doing outdoor shoots and chairs are scarce, she’d have the most comfortable seat in the house.

Biological clock

In the movie, Ip’s wife is pregnant with her second child. Hung said she too would like to have kids – just not now.

‘I have a good chance to be in movies now and it’s something that a lot of people hope for. I don’t want to give it up,’ she said.

But she’s also aware that her biological clock is ticking.

‘I don’t want to get married and have kids when I’m too old. I hope to have a child by the time I’m 35 – any later and it’ll be difficult. But you can’t force these things anyway, so I’ll let nature take its course.’

Although she doesn’t leave a deep impression in the Ip Man movies, Hung’s big break may be on the horizon.

She stars as the feisty lead in the new Chinese movie My Sassy Girl 2, a sequel to the Korean hit that propelled Gianna Jun to fame.

Taiwan-based Singaporean actor Leon Jay Williams plays her hen-pecked boyfriend.

But Hung said that she doesn’t intend to focus all her energies on movies.

‘I still love modelling and being the centre of attention on the catwalk,’ she said.

‘And it (modelling) forces me to maintain my figure and to improve my knowledge on the current fashion trends.’

Perhaps it’s also because she recognises her limitations in the medium of film.

Hung’s statuesque figure may be her strongest asset on the runway, but her height is a bane to her movie career.

She admitted: ‘It’s very clear to me that the roles I get offered are limited because of my height. The number is again reduced if you factor in whether I’m suitable for the roles.

‘People have told me that it’d be much better if I was 5cm shorter.

‘But if I were, then I wouldn’t be able to become a model and come to Hong Kong to act in the first place.’

YIP MAN

Injuries on a gongfu film set are common, but not for Ip Man 2, it seems.

The movie features lots of spectacular fight scenes, including a massive one involving at least 20 actors. But according to Hong Kong director Wilson Yip, there was only one major injury sustained.

The victim was none other than IpMan 2’s action director, veteran gongfu star Sammo Hung.

The 58-year-old plays the pivotal role of Hung Chun-nam, the master of the martial arts skill Hung Quan.

Hung’s character is provoked by a British boxing champion and beaten senseless in the ring by his opponent. It is one of the biggest set pieces and took more than 10days to film.

Yip told FiRST over the phone from Hong Kong: ‘Dai Kor (Cantonese for big brother, referring to Sammo Hung) was really hit by the Caucasian actor in the scene. We didn’t use camera angling.

‘But even though (his face) was bleeding, he continued filming until we wrapped the scene. Only then did he go to the hospital, where he got five stitches for his wound.’

Yip, 46, was full of praise for Hung’s professionalism and dedication.

He attributed the relatively blood-free filming to the lack of weapons used in the movie. All the action scenes, save one, feature bare-knuckle sparring.

On his star Donnie Yen, Yip said: ‘Hehad old injuries in both shoulders, soit took more effort from him to do the action scenes.

‘How painful it was, only he knows. But when one shoulder hurt, Donnie asked Sammo if he could use the other arm to fight instead.’

Change of date

While filming went smoothly, Ip Man 2 hit a snag with its release date. Originally slated to open in the summer, it was pushed forward to this month.

Was it because another movie on the life of Ip Man, The Legend Is Born – Ip Man (directed by Herman Yau), is due for a mid-year release as well?

Yip denied this and explained: ‘It’s because of the World Cup. It happens only once in four years and there’s really nothing bigger than it.’

Ironically, Hong Kong actor To Yu Hang, who plays Master Hung’s disciple in Ip Man 2, plays Ip himself in Yau’s version.

Meanwhile, director Wong Kar Wai is due to release his own Ip Man movie, The Grand Master, next year, with his go-to leading man Tony Leung Chiu Wai in the titular role.

With two movies on the life of Ip Man jostling for attention, Yip’s third movie on Ip Man has been put on hold. The last instalment of the trilogy is supposed to centre on Ip’s most famous student, legendary superstar Bruce Lee.

It’s no wonder then that the number of people interested in Wing Chun has also surged.

Yip said: ‘There were already a lot of people learning the martial art before my 2008 movie. But after the movie was released, it sparked off a trend.

‘The Wing Chun masters whom I invited to be the sequel’s consultants told me they had so many students that they had to turn people away.’

SCARLETT & BLACK

FIRST FEATURE
SCARLETT & BLACK
April 30, 2010

One can easily picture Scarlett Johansson in a dramatic film or even a Broadway play, but as the chop-socking superhero Black Widow in Iron Man 2?

The 25-year-old American is a talented and professional thespian, so she’ll make any role work for her. It also helps that voluptuous Johansson is squeezed into a skin-tight catsuit – that should convince any fanboy.

In Iron Man 2, which opens here tomorrow, she plays Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcements and Logistics Division).

Her other guise is Natalie Rushman, a notary public in Stark Industries’ legal department who’s also Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) newest assistant.

If her Black Widow role takes off, she may follow actor-husband Ryan Reynolds’ footsteps and get her own spin-off superhero movie.

Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was so popular that Marvel greenlit a Deadpool movie.

Did you read any comic books when you were younger?

Never. It wasn’t until I knew that I was playing the Black Widow that I read much on her.

It’s not that I don’t like comic books but they were just not my hobby growing up. The whole Marvel universe is a crazy one (laughs) and it’s very complicated.

Black Widow is really the first female superhero and over the last 50 years or whatever it is, her story has gone in so many different directions.

You have to take the modern story and pay homage to her origins. And just like Iron Man himself, she has such a complicated background and I kind of like that, but it’s a lot to read through (laughs).

What was it like to play a popular Marvel Comics character like Black Widow?

I was nervous going into it just because there was a lot of physical acting and stunt work and all that stuff. And playing this kind of cool, confident superheroine!

But (Iron Man 2 director) Jon Favreau made it so much fun for me; it was such a pleasure and a real adventure in a way. I had a wonderful time.

What was the most daunting challenge?

Well, the physical stuff just took a lot of time and I didn’t really have any. I was cast about a month before we started shooting. I went from being a person who wasn’t really that physically active to suddenly spending four hours in stunt training and two hours in the gym, trying to build all this strength in such a short period of time.

But we had such an incredible stunt team. I spent so much time with them; I spent more time with them than I did with my own family (laughs).

So I’d say the training was the most daunting part of the job because I wanted to be able to sell it.

Why did you feel it was so important?

Because I didn’t want it to be one of those movies where it’s a fight sequence and the actor says his line and turns around and all you see is the back of them for the entire fight. You want it real.

With this character, you wait so long for her to reveal herself that you really want to see her in action. It was painful but it was worth it in the end.

What was it like when you put on the Black Widow suit for the first time?

I did the camera test in the suit to see what it looked like and that was terrifying because I wasn’t quite in the shape that I wanted to be.

I remember putting it on and I thought it looked really great and it was comfortable. I was worried that I wasn’t going to be able to move around in it but it was totally utilitarian. I remember all the Marvel guys and Jon being there and they were just like ‘wow!’

It’s such a powerful thing to wear – it’s skin-tight, it’s got the bracelets, a gun on one belt. It’s no joke, I mean you just have to take the character seriously because she looks like she means war.

There’s talk of interlocking Marvel films. Would you be happy to play her again?

I’d be thrilled to don the catsuit again if the audience is into it. I would love to be able to have the opportunity to explore more of her interesting origin story.

She’s also a part of The Avengers, so who knows?

CAST IRON

FIRST FEATURE
CAST IRON
April 30, 2010

Talk about having an iron grip.

Iron Man’s first cinematic outing two years ago collected over US$585 million (S$804 million) in worldwide box office receipts.

And the much-anticipated sequel – directed by Jon Favreau again – aims to top that as our favourite iron-clad superhero blasts on to the big screen from today.

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown, or rather, a red-gold titanium alloy helmet, as our hero now faces more problems and enemies.

As Iron Man 2 gears up to kickstart this year’s summer blockbuster season, JOANNE SOH gets inside Iron Man’s heads-up display (HUD) to get you up to speed on the major players.

ARMOUR

More streamlined and form-fitted, the Mark IV is also lighter and more aero-dynamic. Like its predecessors, the MArk IV’s is also able to withstand small-arms fine and comes with its own built-in arsenal. But of course, the armour’s main weapon are the repulsors that are embedded in the gloves and the chest price.

ARC REACTOR

Also functions as Stark’s life source. It’s a clean energy source that not only protects Stark’s heart but also serves as a battery that powers the Iron Man Suit.

COLLAPSIBLE SUIT

Superman and Spider-Man wear their supersuits beneath their clothes. Globe-trotting Iron Man carries his armour in a nifty collapsible suitcase that is much more durable and cooler than your average luggage bag.

TONY STARK
(ROBERT DOWNEY JR)

It’s public knowledge that playboy billionaire Tony Stark is the man inside the iron suit.

Everyone wants a piece of him – including the US government, which wants the Iron Man technology to create a new generation of super-soldiers.

But Stark knows the consequences if his arc reactor technology lands in the wrong hands.

Look what happened to his power-hungry business partner Obadiah Stane in the first movie.

In his eagerness to monetise Stark’s arc reactor and Iron Man suit, Stane’s Iron Monger suit (fashioned after Iron Man) crashed and burned – literally.

Naturally, Stark is unwilling to give up his suit.

But being pressured by the government is the least of his problems.

The arc reactor that Stark wears to protect his heart from the shrapnel embedded in his chest is releasing toxins into his blood.

Not knowing how long he will live, Stark gets reckless. To make matters worse, he’s attacked by new baddie Whiplash, who has a personal vendetta against him and all that he owns.

JAMES RHODES
(DON CHEADLE)

Stark’s best friend and only ally in the US military. Torn between loyalty to friend and country, Rhodes later gets his own artillery-laden armour, fighting with Iron Man against an army of mass-produced Iron Man-wannabe drones.

PEPPER POTTS
(GWYNETH PALTROW)

Once Stark’s personal assistant, the no-nonsense iron lady is now promoted to CEO of Stark Enterprises.

Besides having to run a billion-dollar business, Potts is also responsible for keeping her former boss, confidante and possible lover out of trouble.

JUSTIN HAMMER
(SAM ROCKWELL)

A wealthy industrialist and CEO of Hammer Industries, specialising in creating state-of-the-art weaponry for the US government.

Coveting Iron Man’s technology, the mercenary businessman seeks to create his own army of Iron Man replica suits for the military. As his endeavours have yet to yield any effective results, he subsequently teams up with Whiplash to build an entire fleet of armoured drones.

NATALIE RUSHMAN
(SCARLETT JOHANSSON)

A mysterious brunette who is both intriguing and beguiling.

Working as a notary in Stark Enterprises’ legal department, she later steps into Potts’ shoes as Stark’s personal assistant.

But it is later revealed that Rushman is none other than Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, an agent under Nick Fury’s orders to spy on Stark and assess if he is qualified to be part of the Avengers Initiative.

IVAN VANKO
(MICKEY ROURKE)

Raised in the knowledge that Stark’s father had stolen the arc reactor technology from his own scientist father, Vanko, a brilliant physicist himself, wants to make Stark bleed.

Calling himself Whiplash, he fashions a set of powerful electrified whips that can crack Iron Man’s seemingly indestructible armour.

SENATOR STERN
(GARRY SHANDLING)

Working with Justin Hammer, Stern is an obnoxious US senator who is bent on taking the Iron Man suit from Stark.

HAPPY HOGAN
(JON FAVREAU)

Stark’s loyal chauffeur and sparring partner in boxing, Happy also moonlights as Stark’s bodyguard – not that his employer needs one. An extremely skilled driver, Happy also has his eye on new colleague Natalie Rushman.

NICK FURY
(SAMUEL L JACKSON)

Director of international peacekeeping force S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement And Logistics Division), Fury has been trying to recruit Stark into his superhero Avengers Initiative. A true enigma, there’s more to him than meets the (unpatched) eye.

HANYA dengan mendengar judul filem ini, The Men Who Stare At Goats, anda pasti sudah terasa agak tertarik untuk menontonnya.
